General Info

Their name, which means ‘Lost Dancers’ in the Siran language, comes from an old Siran legend, passed down from generation to generation. The legend clams that these small winged creatures used to be an extremely populous species, much like birds of earth, but vanished suddenly for some unknown reason hundreds of years ago. The sira were sad to see the little creatures gone, and so they told their children and grandchildren stories of favorite pets.
Just recently, a small population of NC was discovered in a valley that had been uncharted for hundreds of years. It was blocked off from the rest of the world by high mountains and seas all around, so that whatever had befallen their cousins did not affect them. The sira realized that here were the same creatures they’d thought lost for so long, and took a number of them out to see how they would fare in the world at large. They flourished, spreading and multiplying until they were as numerous as they ever were in the past.

NC are commonly used as messengers, rather like homing pigeons. They can’t speak, having the intelligence of a cat or dog, but are able to make such noises as squeaks and chirps. However, they can recognize people and places, as well as understand simple commands. They are often given as gifts, like puppies in earth’s cultures, and bred for their colors and shapes, some to please, some to be more functional. As an example, a wingless NC would not be much of a messenger, but it would look so like a small furry mammal like a kitten or squirrel, that many families with small children prefer them to the winged variety. Or a muted green and brown NC may not be such a good idea for families, as they would tend to get lost easily when playing outside, but they would make excellent secret messengers or thieves, if one was predisposed toward that activity.

Names
There is no real rule to naming NC, just as there is no rule to naming cats or dogs or pet birds. However, do try to be original and not name your NC the same as someone who has gone before you.

Flying Your NC

General
The NC themselves are always excited about births, whether of their own species or another, especially if they’re bound to a family. Humans and sira often give them as wedding presents and baby shower gifts for this very reason.
Breeding NC is considered a profession by some, a hobby by others, similar to other small animals (such as rabbits, mice, rats, hamsters, gerbils, cavies, birds etc..). They grow fast and are docile, as well as being small enough to keep (about the size of a pigeon) without having to worry about space. Their not being sentient (think cat or dog level intelligence) helps some too. Breeders (termed 'Fliers') often specialize in traits and colors, carefully choosing the parents to meet their standards.
Breeding groups of NC are called Wings. These may consist of anywhere from three to twenty individuals out-of-realm, possibly more in-realm in the wild, and may be spread over a large territory in the wild. Wings’ territories often overlap, which can, and sometimes does, lead to much larger Wings. But that’s alright, as it adds to the genetic diversity. Also, Fliers have been known to interbreed members of their Wings with another’s for the same reason. Better genes mean stronger pups, and a greater chance that they’ll all survive to adulthood.

Flying
NC are different from any other known creature in that it takes three individuals to reproduce. There are also no known genders, each able to create life. ‘Flying’ NC is fairly simple. In the spring and summer months, NC gather into giant Wings of up to fifty, where individuals choose two others and Fly as high as they can. Often, NC Fliers accidentally lose track of one or two of their own, only to have them return a weeks later with half-wild pups. NC Flights are very secretive. It is believed that they conceive magically, using the Lines of Power high in the atmosphere of Lliyani. All out-of-Realm NC must return to Lliyani to Fly, since without the magic there, they can’t conceive. They return to their home realms when the pups are born. While pregnant, NC cannot fly or defend themselves; they must find a wild Wing to both protect/defend them and their unborn pup, and feed them.

There are a few things to remember when Flying your NC:
*There are always three pups per Flight. All three NC involved become pregnant and have one pup each. There is the possibility of twins, but it is so extremely rare as to be almost never heard of. Parents that -are- twins would have a better chance of having two themselves, but twins are always much smaller than normal, and the possibility of death at birth or before is dangerously high. Please don't try for twins. There are never triplets.
*The offspring inherit traits from all three parents, even if one has been magically changed after birth, or ‘Mage-Tampered’.
*While it is alright to have one mage-tampered NC in a Flight, more than one will result in the death of all three pups due to over saturation of magics when they Fly.
*Mutated NC have a greater chance of passing on their traits if they are flown with one other lightly mutated NC, though caution must be exercised in choosing parents; if the flier tries for too many mutations at once, or if two or more of the parents are extremely mutated, it may cause the death of one or more of the pups.
*Closely related NC flights, such as siblings or NC that share at least one parent, and parent-child flights are strictly prohibited. NC that are a generation seperated, such as grandparent-grandchild or close cousins, are allowed only if none of the parents have any mutation or mage-tampered blood. It is usually wise to separate Flight-parents by at least two generations.
*Flightless NC may be able to Fly, but only if there are two other winged NC in the Flight to support them and lift them up. This does not happen often because wild NC don’t usually choose flightless individuals. It’s not a considerably profitable mutation to pass on to their pups.
*Before Flying your NC, I must be sure that they have a good home and your realm can handle another. I may make suggestions before allowing them to Fly, though really, NC are relatively low maintenance and enjoy the company of others, whether their own species, another Lliyani species, or a completely foreign one.

Once I open the forms, you will be able to request a Flight made up of one of the following options:
     1. All your own NC
     2. A mixture of your own and someone else's (*)
     3. A mixture of your NC and mine (**)
     4. A Flight from my Wing (only if you have no NC to Fly yourself)
*If you choose this option, I must recieve an email from the other person/people giving you permission and acknowledging that they will be able to care for their new charge, or if they wish me to adopt their pup/pups out to someone else.
**If you choose to Fly one or two of your NC with one or two of mine, realize that I will likely give the pup born of my NC to someone else, unless you specifically request that I keep it.

Also, realize that, even if two or even all three of your own NC are in the same Flight, you will only recieve one pup from the Flight. The only way to get more than one Pup at a time is to let others use your NC to Fly with their own.

Special Flights
Once in a great while I will offer one of my special NC for Flying. The other two parents will be decided by random draw from the requests I recieve.

Wing Registration
(You need only send this in once and I’ll add yours to the list of out-of-realm Wings. Just let me know when you want to add one or more NC to your Wing, and I'll update accordingly. Also, there must be a link back to my Wing on every out-of-realm Wing page.)
Name:
Keeper:
(name of the wing-keeper if it's not you)
Email:
URL to Wing:
Name of Wing:
(optional; if you don’t want to name your wing, I’ll just use your name)
Number of NC in your Wing: (you must have at least 3 NC to form a Wing, and can have up to 20; inform me if you would like to add an NC to your Wing so I can update the list accordingly)
Open, Closed or Permission Only?:

*Remember, Wings are within your own realm only; no individual can be from another realm. You will be allowed to Fly your NC with someone else’s, but Wings are not allowed to have outside members. Also, all NC in a Wing must be paged and you must have a separate page for all of the Wing’s member information.

NC Registration
(Please send in this form whenever you wish to register an NC. I will send you the formal registration 'papers' via email within a week. Please either put them on the page with your NC, or add a link to them from it's page. Remember, you Do Not HAVE to register every NC you own. Registration is mostly to keep track of NC with extended lineages, so you don't accidentally inbreed. Also, there must be at least a stat table and link back to my Wing on the page of every NC you register.)
